September 2026
Welcome to Northstar’s article series, ‘Meet the Partners of Northstar: Guiding Our Strategic Vision & Company’s Success.’ In this series, we explore the experiences and journeys of our partners who have played a pivotal role in shaping Northstar’s trajectory over the past fifteen years.
Early Roots and Building Foundations
John Townsend’s story is deeply rooted in construction. Growing up surrounded by his father’s family development business, he absorbed the work and sounds of the construction site from a young age. His journey began in college, where he gained hands-on experience working summers for Wynn Development, a national development company, using the lessons he learned from his family’s development business.
After graduation, John continued his development journey, joining Phoenix Corporate Services and eventually moving to Trammell Crow Company after an acquisition. There, he met Lee Burneson, a founding partner at Northstar, who helped set him on a path into project management.
Mentorship and Joining Northstar
After joining Trammell Crow Company, John continued to expand and enhance his skills, with Lee serving as his mentor and John developing expertise in building labs, clean rooms, manufacturing spaces, and clinical areas for clients such as Genzyme, Philips, Agilent, McKesson, MGH, Harvard Medical School, and others. Lee’s mentorship wasn’t just about work; it was about showing him the ropes and sharing valuable insights into the project management industry. The mentorship played an instrumental role in John’s professional journey, ultimately leading him to return to work with Lee at Northstar in 2014 as a Senior Project Manager, just four years after the company’s inception. Having been mentored by Lee since the ’90s, it was a natural progression to work alongside him again.
John’s Impact and Northstar’s Growth
John’s impact on Northstar extends beyond project management. As the company grew, John played a pivotal role in establishing Northstar as a market leader in the life science sector, working with some of the most successful pharmaceutical giants in the region. As an owner’s project manager, John has helped clients navigate challenging mergers, spin-offs, and realignments so they can further their mission of discovering lifesaving therapies and medicines.
John’s first win at Northstar was Baxter Healthcare. This project marked Northstar’s first life science client. Baxalta was the pharmaceutical spinoff of Baxter Healthcare. Consolidation, mergers, and acquisitions in the life sciences industry gave us the opportunity to work with Shire, which acquired Baxalta, and Takeda, which acquired Shire. John’s personal experience and reputation continued to grow, as did Northstar’s brand, resulting in Sanofi hiring us to deliver over one million square feet, including their Cambridge Crossing campus, to our recent win for Biogen’s new 580,000 square foot headquarters. John did not stop there; he was part of the team that helped land Northstar’s first healthcare client, Boston Children’s Hospital. Research and development and manufacturing-related projects are now one of Northstar’s most significant areas of focus, with over 5,000,000 square feet being improved or developed in the greater Boston area.
Professional Evolution and Navigating Challenges
From a senior project manager, John climbed through the ranks to become vice president, shareholder, associate principal, and ultimately principal. Today, he is responsible for principal oversight, leading business development, and managing teams. Principal oversight is a key differentiator at Northstar, as the firm ensures that a principal is involved in every project it undertakes. This involvement isn’t just in name only; instead, principals actively participate in each project because it matters to have proven experience behind every business decision.
Beyond project management, John assumed a leadership role with Northstar’s business development, driving the firm’s growth through account expansion and new business development opportunities. In these capacities, John actively contributes to the company’s culture, fostering a safe environment where young professionals can learn and flourish through networking and maintaining positive relationships with clients and industry colleagues.
Beyond the Office: The Outdoor Enthusiast
Outside the office, John is an avid outdoorsman who enjoys hiking, fishing, boating, snowboarding, and skiing. His boat, a summer companion on Boston Harbor, lets John spend quality time fishing with family and friends, providing much-needed solitude from the fast-paced world of project management.
John’s devotion to his family is evident in his involvement with his two children, who actively participate in various sports teams. The hockey rinks, ski hills, dance competitions, and regattas are familiar locations where John can be found cheering on his kids. John’s New Hampshire retreat in the woods, which he built away from the bustle, is a testament to his hands-on project management skills.
In Conclusion: The Essence of Northstar’s Leadership
In a nutshell, John’s path embodies more than project management and leadership; it’s the heartbeat of Northstar. It’s about resilience, collaboration, communication, and excellence, both professionally and as a family man. John’s dedication to exceptional service in his professional life and to guiding clients and project teams to a safe, predictable outcome epitomizes the spirit of Northstar’s leadership.
