Harvard’s Soldiers Field Park Receives Certificate of Occupancy on Final Phase of Renovations

Harvard’s Soldiers Field Park has received its Certificate of Occupancy on the fourth and final phase of its multi-phased renovations.
Northstar has been working on behalf of Harvard University Housing for over seven years to oversee the master planning, design, and construction of a multi-year phased renovation of Soldiers Field Park (SFP), a 4-building, 435,000 sq. ft., 460-unit complex that houses over 800 Harvard affiliates. SFP was originally designed by Benjamin Thompson and built in 1974.
The renovation of SFP began in 2016 and was designed by Elkus Manfredi Architects and built by Shawmut Design & Construction. The project scope featured renewal of all building systems and finishes, improvement of unit layouts, and exterior enhancements/renewal throughout the complex. The project also incorporated contemporary amenities to SFP, repositioning it to meet today’s resident expectations and compete more effectively in Boston’s growing housing market. The project achieved LEED Gold certification on the first three phases and anticipates achieving LEED Gold on the recently completed final phase.
Northstar was the project lead across all phases including master planning, permitting, project programming, construction sequencing and logistics coordination, budget management, and design and construction oversight. The project culminated with the successful completion of the fourth and final phase in August of 2021, a phase which also included a complete renovation of the Soldiers Field Park Children’s Center, in partnership with Harvard’s Office of Work/Life.
